LockDown Browser is required for certain quizzes and exams in Canvas. Depending on how your instructor has set up the assessment, you may also need to use Respondus Monitor (webcam).

Please refer to the instructions below, based on the type of quiz (Classic or New Quizzes) and whether a webcam is required.

Installation

• Download and install LockDown Browser from the WHCCD link. The links below point to WHCCD's custom version of LockDown Browser; other versions will not work correctly.

  • Windows: LockDown Browser Download
  • Mac: LockDown Browser Download

• Installation is only required once per device.

Classic Quizzes

LockDown Browser Only

• Open LockDown Browser, log in to Canvas, and select your exam. You won't be able to access your quiz from your normal web browser; it must be accessed through LockDown Browser.

• Guidelines:

  • Choose a quiet, interruption-free location.

  • Turn off and put away mobile devices.

  • Clear your area of books, papers, or other devices.

  • Remain at your desk until the exam is completed and submitted.

LockDown Browser + Respondus Monitor (Webcam)

• Requirements: LockDown Browser and a webcam (built-in or USB).

• Open LockDown Browser, log in to Canvas, and select your exam. You won't be able to access your quiz from your normal web browser; it must be accessed through LockDown Browser.

• Before the exam:

  • Select a location where video recording is acceptable.

  • Run Webcam Check and System & Network Check if using a new computer or location.

  • Ensure good lighting, avoid hats with brims, and place your device on a stable surface.

• During the exam:

  • Remain visible on camera at all times.

  • Do not move the device after setup.

New Quizzes

LockDown Browser Only

• Access your quiz in Canvas using your normal web browser.

  • If LockDown Browser is not installed, you’ll be prompted to download and install it.

• Return to the quiz in a standard browser; LockDown Browser will launch automatically.

• Guidelines: Same as Classic Quizzes (quiet location, no unauthorized materials, remain in place until finished).

LockDown Browser + Respondus Monitor (Webcam)

• Requirements: LockDown Browser and a webcam.

• Access your quiz in Canvas using your normal web browser.

  • If LockDown Browser is not installed, you’ll be prompted to download and install it.

• Before the exam:

  • Select a distraction-free location suitable for video recording.

  • Run Webcam Check and System & Network Check if needed.

  • Ensure good lighting and place your device on a stable surface.

• During the exam:

  • Remain visible on camera.

  • Avoid adjusting the webcam once setup is complete.

If you encounter problems with LockDown Browser:

• Use the Help Center button on the toolbar in LockDown Browser.

• Run the System & Network Check, and if applicable, the Webcam Check.

• Live Chat (24/7/365) is available from the Help Center or the “It’s Not Working” troubleshooter (for exams with webcam).

• If you cannot resolve your issue, open a support ticket at Respondus Support, and include details about what steps you’ve already tried.
