Setup Using a Computer Browser
Introduction
This guide assumes you are signing in on a computer (not your mobile device) and will use your mobile device to scan a QR code. If you are only using your mobile device, please see this guide skip to Setup Using a Mobile Phone.
When signing in, you will be prompted to help keep your account secure by setting up Microsoft Authenticator. This app adds an extra layer of protection by helping verify your identity when you sign in, rather than relying on your password alone.
Before you begin, have your mobile device you plan to use for authentication nearby.
Install Microsoft Authenticator on Your Mobile Device
Microsoft Authenticator helps verify your identity when you sign in to your account. Before continuing with the setup, install the app on the mobile device you plan to use for authentication.
1. On your mobile device, open the App Store if you use an iPhone, or the Google Play Store if you use an Android device.
2. Search for Microsoft Authenticator. Confirm that the app is published by Microsoft Corporation to avoid installing a similarly named app.
3. Tap Get on an iPhone or Install on an Android device. Follow any on-screen prompts and wait for the installation to finish.
4. Open Microsoft Authenticator to confirm that it is installed successfully. If prompted, allow notifications so the app can alert you when you need to approve a sign-in request.
5. Return to the account setup page where you were instructed to install the app, then click Next to continue. Keep your mobile device nearby for the remaining setup steps.
Note: Installing Microsoft Authenticator does not automatically connect it to your account. Follow the instructions on the next screen to complete the setup.
